Families of children with cancer experience an immense financial burden. The Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) reported that the out-of-pocket expenses faced by families of children with cancer are estimated to be approximately one third of after-tax income.
Eighty percent of the cost of illness is associated with lost working hours, as parents forgo paid employment in order to provide care. Nearly half of all mothers of children with cancer will give up their employment entirely, and these lost wages can drastically alter a family’s financial situation.
Launched in 2013, this program provides financial assistance to families in a crisis situation where other funds are not available. Gift cards for groceries and gas are available through this program.
Each year at Christmas we match families who do not have funds available to purchase gifts for their children with local business or individuals who wish to offer them support and relief.
